Duties and Responsibilities

As a Teaching Associate on the pathway to becoming a Teacher/Researcher you will, under the guidance of a Teacher/Researcher:

  • Study, understand, and put into practice progressive education theory and the Voyagers’ Approach to teaching.
  • Assist in developing curriculum maps, class descriptions, student narratives, portfolio posts, informational articles, and other written materials.
  • Prepare and study material to be taught, in order to be knowledgeable of the objectives of the lesson.
  • Develop instructional subject and project materials, and apply innovative ideas to make learning flexible and enjoyable.
  • Plan, prepare, and develop various teaching aids for use in the classroom, including activity sheets, drawings, and similar classroom materials.
  • Support differentiated instruction by working with students’ particular learning styles and needs.
  • Present subject matter to children utilizing a variety of methods including stories, discussions, role play, mini-lessons, and interactive, hands-on engagement.
  • Lead classroom activities and lessons.
  • Track students’ progress during lessons, and on formative and summative assessments.
  • Join and assist in facilitating student-led PTS conferences to address children’s goals and progress.
  • Assist children, individually or in groups, to reinforce learning.
  • Act as a role model for students during lunch and recess.
  • Supervise students during outdoor activities, during transitions, and on field trips.
  • Lead, guide, and serve as a mentor to interns, and volunteers performing related work;
  • Meet with the lead teacher to reflect on observations and discuss new tactics and subject matter.
  • Tend to all class responsibilities in the lead teacher’s absence.
  • Attend team and all-staff meetings, trainings, and discussions to understand the functioning of the classroom and the strategies implemented day-to-day.
  • Cultivate values of kindness, respect, compassion, and integrity within students.
  • Support the school’s success by partnering with staff and leadership to achieve goals around enrollment, accreditation, and engagement.
  • Cultivate positive relationships with families, teachers, community contacts and corporate partners in a way that is consistent with the unique to children’s needs and the school’s sustainability.
  • Ensure a safe and stimulating educational environment.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Basic understanding of childhood development and steps to support children through various ages
  • Experience and passion for working with children
  • Warm, nurturing, creative, and engaging disposition
  • Personal accountability and patience essential when working with children daily in a classroom environment
  • Ability to maintain a professional, positive, and patient demeanor when children present challenging behavior
  • Experience fostering positive relationships with children and adults in a learning environment
  • Ability to effectively communicate with teachers regarding student’s progress and behavior.
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to prioritize activities quickly and support the teacher in instances that are exceptionally busy
  • Basic writing, math, and science skills are necessary to assist in teaching students and supporting their curiosities

A Plus

  • Experience in an Early Childhood or Elementary Education setting
  • Experience in emergent, experiential curriculum as a student, assistant, intern, or teacher.
  • Background in constructivist-play based settings.
