A Teacher Assistant at our school supports Associate and Lead Teachers and their students in day-to-day classroom operations. They assist with clerical duties, student support, and day to day delivery of curriculum. They also provide clean-up, set-up, and materials management.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide support to the teacher to ensure a safe and appropriate educational environment, with respect for the ideas and curiosities posed by children.
  • Assist in planning and preparation for daily activities; aids the instructional efforts of the teacher.
  • Plans, prepares, and develops various teaching aids for use in the classroom, including manipulatives and related materials.
  • Assists in capturing photos, writing captions and posting, with approval, on Seesaw, our digital portfolio platform.
  • May participate in the recruitment, training, and guidance of classroom volunteers.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Some coursework in the field of education including college, professional development, certification, or related studies.
  • Proven ability to work with children as a long term babysitter, nanny, camp counselor, youth leader, or other related job or volunteer service.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for work experience in the field.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to provide activities for abd engage in conversations with children that encourage healthy growth.
  • Child supervision skills.
  • Ability to provide a supportive and caring environment for children.
  • Skill in preparing instructional aids and materials.

Conditions of Employment

  • Ability to secure and maintain a valid NJ Driver’s License. (Driving is required)
  • Ability to obtain and maintain current adult, child & infant CPR and First Aid Certification. Initial certification must be achieved within 6 weeks of date of hire.
  • Must enroll in professional development online courses in Safe Schools as assigned within the period designated.
  • Successful candidate must pass a fingerprinting background check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Considerable physical activity. Requires an ability to engage in physical education and outdoor games, and climb and descend up to three flights of stairs while accompanying children.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as cold and hot weather and snow and rain while accompanying children outdoors.
  • Work in a busy environment with lots of activity and many voices in conversation and song.
