SAIL at Voyagers’

SAIL (Students Achieving Independent Lives) is an inclusive educational initiative of Voyagers’ Community School, offering adults meaningful opportunities to discover their interests, develop practical skills, build relationships, and prepare for greater independence and employment.

Rooted in Voyagers’ progressive, human-centered approach to education, SAIL provides vocational, creative, social, and community-based learning experiences for individuals of varying abilities and backgrounds.

While SAIL has extensive experience supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, its programs are open to the general public and available through private-pay tuition as well as approved funding arrangements.

SAIL reflects the enduring vision of Voyagers’ Community School: that learning should be purposeful, relationships meaningful, and every individual encouraged to discover their capabilities and pursue their aspirations.

SAIL grew out of Voyagers’ Community School’s long-standing partnership with Brookdale Community College.

When Brookdale sought a state grant to expand opportunities for young adults transitioning into adulthood, Voyagers’ was invited to help envision something different—an educational experience built around dignity, independence, purpose, and meaningful participation in the community.

Drawing on Voyagers’ history of educational innovation, its founder and collaborative partners worked with Brookdale to develop a program that would respond to emerging needs while reflecting a shared commitment to individualized, experiential learning.

From that collaboration, SAIL—Students Achieving Independent Lives—was born.

Over the years, SAIL expanded beyond its original scope, developing a broader range of educational, vocational, creative, and social opportunities.

Today, SAIL has its own programs, educators, and community while remaining an integral part of Voyagers’ Community School and the educational philosophy that inspired its creation.

SAIL offers far more than a traditional classroom experience. Our programs are designed to help participants develop and apply skills in ways that are relevant to their interests, everyday lives, relationships, and future aspirations.

Areas of focus include:

  • Independent living and practical everyday skills
  • Communication, relationships, and self-advocacy
  • Career exploration, vocational education, and Micro-Certification
  • Entrepreneurship, creativity, and collaborative projects
  • Community participation and leadership
  • Social experiences, personal development, and lifelong learning

Through guided instruction, hands-on projects, worksite experiences, and community engagement, participants explore their strengths, develop confidence, and work toward personally meaningful goals.

One of SAIL’s distinguishing characteristics is its connection to the wider Voyagers’ Community School community.

Participants have opportunities to interact, collaborate, and contribute across ages and abilities through authentic educational experiences.

These include operating a school store, supporting school events, providing graphic arts services, participating in supervised early childhood learning activities, and collaborating with students and educators in shared creative and learning spaces.

Community partnerships, workplace observations, and real-world projects extend learning beyond the school.

These experiences are not simply opportunities for socialization. They are meaningful ways for participants to apply developing skills, build relationships, take responsibility, and contribute to a broader community.

SAIL offers educational and enrichment opportunities throughout the year, including practical life-skills programs, vocational Micro-Certification, entrepreneurship, creative experiences, social gatherings, and summer programs.

Programs are open to individuals of varying abilities and backgrounds, with enrollment based on interests, program suitability, and availability.

SAIL continues to grow through reflection, collaboration, and an ongoing commitment to meaningful educational opportunity.

Voyagers’ Community School and its founder remain actively involved in guiding SAIL’s development, ensuring that its programs reflect the same progressive philosophy that has shaped Voyagers’ from the beginning.

As interests, opportunities, and community needs evolve, so does SAIL—creating new pathways for learning, personal growth, vocational development, and purposeful participation in everyday life.

At its heart, SAIL carries forward a belief central to Voyagers’: education is a lifelong journey, and every individual deserves opportunities to continue learning, contributing, and becoming.
