SAIL at Voyagers’

SAIL (Students Achieving Independent Lives) is a program created to support young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities as they move into adulthood. Designed for individuals ages 18–30+, SAIL focuses on independence, social connection, confidence, and participation in real life and employment.

SAIL was inspired by the values and vision of Voyagers’ Community School and its founder, and continues to be championed, refined, and strengthened through that same commitment to human-centered, relationship-driven learning.

The origins of SAIL

SAIL grew out of Voyagers’ Community School’s long-standing partnership with Brookdale Community College. As the college sought to obtain a state grant to expand services for young adults who needed something different as they transitioned into adulthood—more dignity, more purpose, and more opportunity to belong—Voyagers’ was invited into the conversation.

With a proven track record as an educational innovator, Brookdale knew they could rely on Voyagers’ leadership, its founder, and collaborative partners to analyze the need, align with the college’s goals, and design a program that was both meaningful and sustainable. From that work, SAIL—Students Achieving Independent Lives—was born.

Over several years, SAIL grew in both scope and reach, expanding beyond the original parameters of the grant and serving a broader community of young adults. As the need for thoughtful, adult-centered programming became increasingly clear, Voyagers’ leadership formalized SAIL as a distinct program dedicated specifically to this stage of life.

Today, while SAIL operates independently—with its own offerings, staff, and community—it remains deeply connected to the mission and values that have guided Voyagers’ from the beginning.

What SAIL is designed to offer

SAIL provides young adults with opportunities to grow in ways that matter in adult life — not through busywork or supervision, but through meaningful experiences that build confidence and capability.

Core areas of focus include:

  • Independence and daily life skills
  • Communication and self-advocacy
  • Social connection and friendships
  • Employment exploration and micro-certifications
  • Community engagement and leadership

Programs are responsive, flexible, and designed to meet individuals where they are, while encouraging growth and participation in the wider world.

A living, evolving program

SAIL is not a static model. It continues to evolve through reflection, feedback, and real-world experience.

Voyagers’ Community School and its founder remain actively involved in supporting, iterating, and championing the program — ensuring that SAIL stays aligned with its purpose: helping young adults build lives that feel full, connected, and their own.
