Leadership

Karen
Founder/CEO
Karen is the founder and guiding visionary of Voyagers’ Community School, leading with the belief that education should be deeply human, curiosity-driven, and rooted in purpose. She is a respected thought leader known for advancing progressive education and inspiring meaningful change in schools and learning communities nationwide.
Karen began her career teaching social studies in Harvard, Massachusetts, and later led fitness and recreation programs, developed interdisciplinary curricula, and served as a national trainer for the Physical Best program. Inspired by her own children, she founded Voyagers’ Community School in 2004 after spending 18 months crafting its philosophical foundation.
Following residencies in Holmdel and Howell, New Jersey, Karen restored and operated Voyagers’ in a historic 18,000-square-foot building for six years. In 2021, she relocated the school to Brookdale Community College, where she cultivated partnerships with higher education faculty and administrators and launched SAIL — Students Achieving Independent Lives — an innovative and expanding program for adults with intellectual disabilities.
Karen remains deeply involved in daily school life, teaching, serving as a college and career counselor, and sitting on the Board as Secretary. Under her guidance, 100% of her advisees have been accepted to four-year colleges and universities.
As an educational consultant and founder of Disrupt Education Today, Karen supports schools nationwide in implementing progressive practices and launching mission-driven programs across public, charter, and independent systems. She contributes to educational publications and platforms focused on reimagining learning.
Karen holds a BA in Political Science and Communications from Hood College, an M.Ed. in Education and Partnership from Goddard College, advanced studies in Exercise Physiology from Springfield College, and a Master’s Certificate in College Counseling from UCLA.
A frequent speaker and media guest, Karen has presented at the Progressive Education Network and the Association for Constructivist Teaching, appeared on DisruptED TV and RVNTV’s CEO Chat, and contributed to national and international podcasts. She has also served as the New Jersey Liaison for the Alternative Education Resource Organization and held leadership roles in civic and educational organizations.
Through her work at Voyagers’, SAIL, and beyond, Karen continues to advocate for environments where learners of all ages are seen as capable, curious, and powerful contributors to their world.

After returning to the United States, Larry worked in the Henry Mountains and Fish Lake regions of southern Utah, leading high school students through 60-day therapeutic wilderness programs. Students learned navigation, fire-building, survival skills, and ecological awareness while studying life through direct sensory experience.
Larry’s commitment to experiential education led him to further study at the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont, where he learned to design and facilitate international exchange and travel programs. He later interned at The Putney School, teaching ESL science and English while working in international education.
Larry spent the following decade in Brooklyn teaching Biology and Earth Science at both the middle and high school levels in New York City public schools. Alongside teaching, he developed a strong interest in food systems and sustainability, interning at New York City’s largest rooftop farm and installing and maintaining living green roofs in New York and New Jersey.
At Voyagers’, Larry leads environmental science and Outdoor School programming, encouraging students to connect with the Earth and explore their interdependence with natural systems.
