Learning basic building skills

This course invites students to understand basic building skills for the gardening. They will learn simple and practical tips for choosing the appropriate tools, materials, and designs for several garden projects. Students will touch upon how to build garden structures such as raised beds, strawberry pallet boxes, and more! This is an interactive class where participants get to practice fundamental hands-on techniques while posing questions to the teachers about projects that they may someday build independently. Students will help decide the content of this class.

Students will also participate in preparing, planting and maintaining garden boxes and the garden itself. They will choose what plants and vegetables that are best for the school garden. The will also have a hand in maintaining the Voyagers’ Community Bug Box.

Beautifying the gardens

Week one found the students began the course by discussing some of the projects that they would like to begin in the garden. All of them were very excited to make a difference in the front yard that all of their classmates would benefit from. They have helped to measure and cut the wood that will enable us to build a raised planter to complete the group of four. All of them have taken turns measuring and cutting the wood. They have also begun to disassemble pallets so that we can repurpose them and create gardening structures in which to grow strawberries. They have again viewed the photographs and commented on the structure, all of them have used hammers and an electric saw to help.

They have also begun to water and weed the beds to ensure that the plants put in for the garden weekend will survive and flourish. We have also discussed trellises as a way of beautifying the garden and supporting some of the vegetable and flowers with longer stems and climbing properties.



  • Students will view their outdoor area and garden as learning tools or in the very least classroom enrichment possibilities
  • Expected  academic benefits will include biology, math, geometry and food behavior

  • Increased possibilities in recreational activities which will benefit the school community and the area community at large

  • Increase opportunities for all students to have experience with a natural ecosystem complexity
