Electives – Basketball

Monmouth County Private School – Basketball Elective

Basketball is a wonderful sport. It’s a sport of precision, a sport of control and a sport that requires an athletic and physical endurance. Let’s take the skills we learned in our last sports class and focus them in on one specific sport; basketball. We will travel to basketball gyms and learn the basic rules and regulations of playing basketball on a regulations size court. We will focus on fundamental skills, competitive play including 2 v. 2, 3 v. 3 and 1 v. 1. We will also play games that target certain skills. This class will focus most directly on good sportsmanship in a competitive environment.

Students in this class have improved their fundamental skills. Younger students have significantly improved their ability to dribble, shoot and move around the court without the basketball. They have also improved their ability to play defense. Older students have learned and improved their ability to manage their own 2 v. 2 and 3 v. 3 games. All students in the class were exposed to various elements of team play and proper sportsmanship on the basketball court.

Students were encouraged to support each other, congratulate each other, pick up another player off the court when they fell down and compete with each other in a positive way. This class has allowed any student to take the fundamental skills in basketball, competition and sportsmanship and develop them further on a competitive recreation team or out on the playground and develop them further, allowing each student to become a better and more well-rounded basketball player.
